With the National Dementia Strategy, Germany is participating in addressing a global challenge. Currently there are over 50 million people living with dementia worldwide. In 2012, the World Health Organisation declared dementia as a public health priority. In 2017, it published the ‚Global action plan on the public health response to dementia 2017-2025‘ and called on its member states to take comprehensive action on behalf of people with dementia at national levels. In adopting the National Dementia Strategy, the German Federal Government and the stakeholders of the National Dementia Strategy have responded to this request. The experiences of other countries in developing, implementing and advancing their dementia strategies supported the development process in Germany. Therefore the English translation of the National Dementia Strategy for Germany is also intended to contribute to the international discourse.
